Went to a good hospital for a simple eye power checkup. While waiting for the
doctor to see me, a nurse approached me and asked if I used the computer
frequently. I said I did. She threw a horrified look and hurriedly asked another
nurse to check me for pores in my retina.
I was perplexed.
On asking the second nurse what it was all about, she said that computer usage can cause pores in the retina which can eventually damage the eye. Sounded like pure nonsense to me.
She said I just had to pay a small fee, show her the receipt and she'd pour a few drops of a medicine which would dilate my pupils so that they could check my retina for pores. The drops would cause blurry vision for four hours.
Luckily, I had come to the hospital by bike, so I told her I didn't have the time, and I couldn't ride my bike with blurry vision. Had a lucky escape that day.
Now a friend recently showed me a colour photograph of his retina. He pointed to a yellow area and said that was a pore in his retina. He had absolutely no eye problems. Normal sighted. He just went to the hospital to get an anti-glare eye glasses prescription. The eye doctor of this very expensive hospital told him to close one eye, and then the other eye and tried to make him believe that he had some problem with his vision. He told her there was no problem at all. Yet, she asked him to have a photograph of his retina taken, just to be sure. He, actually agreed to it and ended up paying more almost twenty times the amount I was asked to pay for this test. He took the test because he had medical insurance, but imagine the plight of those who don't.
My brother is a doctor. He says he's never heard of any retinal pores caused by computer usage. The yellow area on the retina of my friend was a naturally occurring spot in the eye. Everyone has it.
Watch out people! There are plenty of doctors out there who fleece you. Proof? See this, this and this.
The only real pore, is a pore in their morality.
