The refresh superstition

Noticed those people who when they close a window or open a window, perform a sacred ritual of refreshing their screen 3 times?
The people who are really doing good to the computer, are those who refresh it 6 times...

...or so they think...

Next time you meet them, make sure you ask them if they could provide at least ONE reason as to why they're doing it?
While they're done tumbling down their memory lane and return with a blank expression, take a seat and convince them that in the normal world, people refresh the screen once, only if there are any distortions on the screen.

Refreshing the screen doesn't make your computer work any better. It's a monkey-see, monkey-do situation spreading like a contagious disease! Please stop it. You could send the link to this page, to your friends who are still in love with refreshing.

Flaky, unreliable internet through USB port?

Does using an ethernet card give you faster internet speeds than a USB port?
Does internet connection get broken or flaky when we use a USB port?

Answer: NO.

I've been using internet connection through the modem - USB port for more than a year and I'm getting excellent connectivity and speeds of 50-230kbps for my 250kbps connection.

So why is everyone in support of ethernet cards?
Well, internet providers outsource their internet connection work to people who sometimes have their private franchisee of computer hardware. For every house they install an internet connection (this is about two to three houses a day), if they can sell the people an ethernet card worth Rs.250, imagine how much they'd make in a month! A well spread rumour always works in their favour.

Homemakers who don't know much about technology, readily agree to the ethernet card because these business savvy people can always fake a non-connection story. The USB port address is 192.168.1.2 while the usual ethernet port address is 192.168.1.1.

Beware of these "technical experts" who spread incorrect information which would convince any non-tech-savvy victim. They can easily invent excuses about spyware problems, wireless communication not passing through walls (ROFL!!) etc.

Prayer meeting = tasty food?

Was witness to an amusing conversation between two children. This post is a result of a curious journey into the what's and why's of that conversation during the social gathering.

Kids find prayer meetings boring! Time they could've spent completing the flight simulator mission they had nearly won, now goes in a long prayer and looking up at towering adults chatting.
"Mom...can we go home now...?"

The "can we go home" yearning quickly dies out the moment the compensation for the waiting comes in the form of delicious cakes, plantains, vadas, samosas and juice! Yum!
As these kids grow up, they wonder if the sole purpose of these prayer meetings were the food :)

Dear parents, whether your kids ask you or not about the purpose of such social gatherings, please do tell them about it. And do tell them that the food isn't there to attract people, but when a person invites people to their home, it is their duty as a host to provide them refreshments.

Glug glug glug..... "Aaaah!"

Remember the summer your parched throat craved for a bottle of that heavenly soft-drink at the nearby shop? Well, the throat didn't see the bottles of mineral water right next to the soft-drinks.
My throat has the same story to tell :)

You've heard the advice: "Don't listen to your heart. Listen to your brain".
Well I'd tell you - "Don't listen to your throat. Listen to your body".

What we really need when thirsty, is water. Pure water. Not water mixed with preservatives, carbon-dioxide and what not! Just creates more work for the kidney.
Your body will thank you (and it's been my experience) if you buy a bottle of water or a tender coconut to quench your thirst, rather than a bottle of soft-drink which will bring back your thirst within 15 minutes of drinking it.

Besides, you get double the water for half the price of the soft-drink! :)

ps: Created the picture myself.
